Two Significant Rulings

You may wish to compare the following two rulings:

  • A May 19, 2025 memorandum opinion by DC Distict court judge Beryl Howell that President Donald Trump lacked the power to terminate without cause the board of the independent U.S. Institute of Peace

  • A  May 19, 2025 Supreme Court per curiam opinion allowing the Trump administration to remove protections from nearly 350,000 Venezuelan immigrants who had been allowed to remain in the United States without risk of deportation under a program known as Temporary Protected Status, but the ability of individual immigrants to bring some legal challenges would be preserved if the government tried to cancel their work permits or to remove them from the country.
